What's the best way to learn about Forex Trading?

If you search on YouTube, every video makes it look easy. Two indicators, one secret strategy, and you double your account in a week.

Let me be honest with you. That's marketing. The reality is completely different.

Forex is the largest financial market in the world. Over $7 trillion moves every single day. It's open 24 hours a day, 5 days a week. That means opportunity is endless, but so is the risk. A broker will give you an account in 5 minutes, but learning how to survive in that market takes 12 to 18 months.

Most beginners jump straight to the buy and sell button. They skip the boring parts. That's exactly why 90% of them quit. If you want to learn it properly - like a real business - you need a structured roadmap.

Here is the one that actually works.

1. Learn The Business Before You Learn The Chart

For the first two weeks, forget about making money. Think like a student.

a) The Language: When you buy EUR/USD, you are not buying a chart. You are betting that Europe's economy will do better than America's. You need to know the difference between Majors like EUR/USD which are stable and cheap, and Exotics which can be extremely dangerous for a beginner.

b) The Math That Saves You: Understand what a pip is and what a lot size means. A standard lot is 100,000 units, but you will start with a micro lot - just 1,000 units. This is how you keep your risk tiny. And please, understand leverage. Leverage is not free money. A 1:500 leverage means you can control a big position with small money, but one bad move can wipe out your entire account. High leverage is the number one killer of retail accounts.

c) The Right Time to Trade: The market has four sessions - Sydney, Tokyo, London, and New York. The real, clean moves happen during the London - New York overlap, which is around 6:30 PM to 11:00 PM in our time. Don't trade at 3 AM when only Sydney is open. There is no volume, only random noise and high spread.

Important Warning: Before you even think about strategy, choose your broker carefully. Always use a properly regulated broker - FCA, ASIC, or CySEC regulated. An unregulated broker can manipulate spreads and never let you withdraw. Your broker is your business partner.

2. Pick ONE Strategy and Marry It For 6 Months

This is where everyone fails. Monday RSI, Tuesday Moving Averages, Wednesday some TikTok Smart Money Concept. You will learn nothing.

A professional knows only one or two setups, but he knows them better than anyone else.

Start with naked price action. Forget 5 indicators. Indicators tell you what already happened. Price tells you what is happening now.

Learn to answer three simple questions:

  • Is the market trending up, trending down, or stuck in a range?
  • Where are the real support and resistance levels where price has reacted multiple times?
  • Where is liquidity sitting that might get swept?

Once you know that, learn a simple entry model like a Break of Structure [BOS]. When price breaks the last high, comes back and retests it - that's a high-probability zone. Later you can add concepts like Fair Value Gaps [FVG] and Liquidity Sweeps, but master the basics first.

And always use Multi-Timeframe Analysis. Your Daily or 4-Hour chart tells you WHERE to go. Your 15-Minute chart tells you WHEN to enter. Never take a 5-minute buy signal against a daily downtrend. You are swimming against the current.

Check an economic calendar on ForexFactory every morning. You don't need to predict NFP or CPI. You just need to avoid trading 15 minutes before and after major red news. That's not trading, that's a lottery ticket.

3. Risk Management Is Your Real Job

People think trading is about perfect entries. It's not. It's about how well you manage your loss when you are wrong.

Here are the 3 Golden Rules of institutional traders:

Rule 1: The 1% Rule
Never risk more than 1-2% of your account on one trade. If you have $500, you can only lose $5 to $10 per trade. It sounds small, but it means you can be wrong 20 times in a row and still have 80% of your money left.

Rule 2: Reward Must Be Bigger Than Risk
Never take a trade where you risk $10 to make $5. Professionals only take trades where they risk $10 to make at least $20 or $30. This is a 1:2 or 1:3 Risk-to-Reward ratio. Even if you win only 5 out of 10 trades, you will still be profitable.

Rule 3: Pre-Define Everything
Set your stop loss where your idea is proven wrong, before you enter. Never move it further away out of hope. And set a daily circuit breaker - if you lose 3% in a day, close your laptop. The market will be there tomorrow. Revenge trading is how small losses become blown accounts.

4. The Four Stages You Cannot Skip

Everyone wants to go from zero to live in one week. This is the slow, boring path that actually makes you a trader.

Stage 1: The Notebook Phase [1 Month]
No trading. Open TradingView. Pick ONLY EUR/USD. Go back in history and mark 100 examples of your one setup. Screenshot them. This builds your eyes without any emotional pressure.

Stage 2: Demo Trading Like It's Real [2-3 Months]
Now open a demo account, but treat the fake money like your real salary. The goal is not to make fake millions. The goal is to execute your plan flawlessly 100 times without breaking a single rule.

Stage 3: The Journal is Everything
Every pro has one. In a notebook, write for every trade: Why did I enter? What was the news? How did I feel - scared, greedy, or bored? After a month, you will see you always lose on Fridays or after a big win. No journal = No improvement.

Stage 4: Small Real Account [The Reality Check]
Only when you are profitable on demo for two months straight, start with $100-$200 on a cent or micro account. Real money brings fear and greed that demo can never teach you.

Small but critical point for small accounts: In cent accounts, the spread and commission impact is much higher. A wide spread of 2-3 pips can eat 20-30% of your small target. That's why trading during high liquidity hours and using an ECN/Raw spread account is vital for small accounts. Otherwise, your drawdown increases even when your direction is right.

5. Fix Your Head, or The Market Will

Trading is 20% strategy and 80% psychology.

Two monsters will hunt you:

1. FOMO: When Gold flies 200 pips without you, your brain screams "Buy now!" A pro says, "I missed it. It's okay. Another bus will come tomorrow." A missed trade costs $0. A forced trade costs real money.

2. Revenge: After a loss, your ego wants to double the lot size to win it back. That is how a $10 loss becomes a $100 loss in ten minutes.

Think like a casino. A casino doesn't cry over one lost hand. It knows over 10,000 hands, probability makes it profitable. Your one trade means nothing. Think in a sample size of 100 trades.

And stay away from Telegram signal groups showing rented Lamborghinis. If someone had a strategy that makes 50% a month, they would never sell it to you for $29. Learn to fish yourself.

Forex is not a get-rich-quick scheme. It's a get-rich-slow skill. Start small, stay boring, and be consistent. That's the real secret that no one tells you on Instagram.
