What Is This Concept?
Market structure is just how price moves. Price never moves randomly. It moves in steps. It makes a high, then a low, then a higher high, then a higher low. That is all structure is. If you understand this, you understand the market.
Think of the market like a war between buyers and sellers. When buyers win, price goes up. When sellers win, price goes down. Big banks and institutions are the ones who win this war. They leave footprints on the chart. Your job is to follow those footprints.
There are two footprints that matter most. BOS and CHoCH.
BOS means Break of Structure. It means the trend is strong and it will continue. Buyers are still buying in an uptrend. Sellers are still selling in a downtrend.
CHoCH means Change of Character. It means the trend is getting tired. The buyers or sellers are getting weak. The market might be about to reverse.
One is a green signal to stay with the trend. The other is a yellow signal to be careful.
BOS vs CHoCH in one line
BOS is a green light. It says the road is clear, keep driving in the same direction.
CHoCH is a yellow light. It says slow down, the road might be closing, get ready to turn.
Step-by-Step Rule: How To Identify BOS and CHoCH On The Chart
Open a clean chart. No indicators. No RSI, no MACD. Just candles. Go to EURUSD or GBPUSD on H1 or H4 timeframe. It is much easier to see structure there.
How to Find a BOS (Trend Continues)
This is for trend continuation. You want to know if the trend is safe.
1. Find the trend first. Look left. Is price making higher highs and higher lows? That is an uptrend. Is price making lower lows and lower highs? That is a downtrend. If you cannot see a clear trend, do not trade. Wait.
2. Mark the last important swing. In an uptrend, mark the last swing high. This is the last top before price came down. In a downtrend, mark the last swing low. This is the last bottom before price went up. Only mark the clear tops and bottoms. Ignore the small ones.
3. Wait for a real break with body close. This is the most important rule. In an uptrend, price must go up and CLOSE with its body above the last swing high. Not just a wick. The candle body must close above. That is a bullish BOS. In a downtrend, price must go down and close with its body below the last swing low. That is a bearish BOS.
4. Do not chase. Wait for a pullback. After a BOS, smart traders never buy at the top. They wait. Price will come back down a little to take a breath. It will come back to a discount area or an order block. That is where you look for your entry, in the direction of the BOS.
How to Find a CHoCH (Trend May Change)
This is for reversal warning. You want to know if the trend is ending.
1. Look for failure. In a strong uptrend, price should make a new higher high. But what if it cannot? It tries to go up but fails. Then it turns around and comes down hard. That is the first sign of weakness.
2. Mark the last holding low. In an uptrend, the last higher low is holding the whole uptrend. If that low breaks, the uptrend is in trouble. When price breaks that last higher low with a body close, that is a bearish CHoCH. The character changed from bullish to bearish.
3. Same for downtrend. Price tries to make a new lower low but fails. Then it goes up and breaks the last lower high that was holding the downtrend. When that high breaks with a body close, that is a bullish CHoCH. The character changed from bearish to bullish.
4. A CHoCH is a warning, not an entry. Never buy or sell just because you saw a CHoCH. A CHoCH only tells you to change your bias. You stop looking for buys and start looking for sells after a bearish CHoCH. You wait for the NEXT BOS in the new direction. The CHoCH is the alert. The next BOS is the confirmation.
Common Mistakes To Avoid
Beginners lose money because of these 3 mistakes. Do not do this.
1. Marking every small high and low. Your chart will look like a mess. You will see fake BOS and CHoCH everywhere. Only mark levels that are obvious from far away. If you need to zoom in to see the level, it is not a real level. Banks trade big levels, not small noise.
2. Thinking a wick is a break. This is the number one mistake. A wick going above a high is NOT a BOS. It is just liquidity grab. Big players hunting stop losses. Always wait for the candle body to close. No body close, no break. This one habit will save your account.
3. Entering directly on CHoCH. You see a CHoCH and you instantly think reversal and you enter. Then price goes back into the old trend and hits your stop loss. Do not do it. A CHoCH means wait. Wait for price to show you a new BOS in the opposite direction. Then you enter. Patience pays here.
Practical Summary (Your 30-Second Checklist)
Before you click buy or sell, ask these 5 questions. It takes 30 seconds.
1. What is the main trend? Higher highs and higher lows? Or lower highs and lower lows?
2. Where are the key levels? Where is the last clear swing high and the last clear swing low? Mark only those two.
3. Is there a BOS? Did price break the last high/low in the direction of the trend with a body close? If yes, it is BOS. Your plan is trend continuation.
4. Is there a CHoCH? Did price fail to make a new extreme and break the opposite side instead? If yes, it is CHoCH. Your plan is to stop trading the old trend and wait for a new one.
5. Is it a real break? Did the candle close with its body past the level? If it is only a wick, ignore it. It is fake.
Keep your chart clean. Just price, swing highs, swing lows, BOS and CHoCH. If you master this, you will see the market the way institutions see it.
