GER40 is not a market you predict. It's a market you decode. While most retail traders see random volatility in Germany 40 CFD, institutional traders see a perfectly engineered sequence of liquidity grabs, structure shifts, and unmitigated zones.
This 1H case study breaks down exactly how smart money trapped retail, engineered a bearish run, and then reversed it from ultimate demand.
1. The Setup: Retail Zone and The Buy-Side Liquidity Grab
Everything started in late August with a classic trap.
First, price pushed hard and created a swing high. This was the RETAIL ZONE. Every breakout trader was buying here, thinking GER40 will continue. Volume spiked, retail FOMO kicked in.
Then price made a small pullback and pushed again to create a slightly higher high. This second peak is the most important level on the entire chart - the BUY SIDE LIQUIDITY ZONE.
Institutions deliberately pushed price above the first high because they know what rests above a swing high - Buy-Stop liquidity. The stop losses of retail sellers and the breakout buy orders of retail buyers are all pooled there. Price wicked sharply above, grabbed that liquidity, and immediately rejected. No continuation. Just a liquidity grab.
Right after that grab, price left behind a fresh bearish order block - ULTIMATE SUPPLY - UNMITIGATED. This zone at the top has never been touched again since September. That is pure, untouched institutional supply.
2. Confirmation: Bearish Break of Structure (BOS)
A liquidity grab alone is not enough. We need structural confirmation.
After taking the buy-side liquidity, GER40 collapsed with strong bearish displacement. It broke the last Higher Low and closed below it. This is our BEARISH BREAK OF STRUCTURE (BOS).
This BOS told us two things clearly:
- The bullish structure from July is officially over.
- The liquidity grab was for a reversal, not for continuation.
From that BOS, we marked a descending trendline. For the entire month of September, GER40 respected it - making lower highs and lower lows. This is where retail dip-buyers were continuously getting trapped.
3. The Re-Accumulation: Ultimate Demand Pullback Zone
A bearish trend needs a place to end. That place was the DEMAND PULLBACK ZONE in early October.
This area, marked as ULTIMATE DEMAND - UNMITIGATED around 24,500.0 - 24,800.0, showed institutional footprints:
- A clear double bottom formation
- Aggressive bullish displacement with strong bullish engulfing candles
- Multiple POI - Point of Interest marked with green arrows showing buyers stepping in
This was not retail support. This was where institutions finished taking sell-side liquidity and started re-accumulating long positions. The moment price left this zone, it broke the bearish trendline with momentum. In SMC, we call this a CHoCH - Change of Character. The bearish market structure ended here.
4. The Current Battleground: Mitigated vs Unmitigated Zones
This is the most crucial lesson in this case study, and where 90% of traders make mistakes.
As price rallied from ultimate demand, it met two different types of supply:
A) SUPPLY - MITIGATED - Around 25,980.0
This zone was already tested once in late October. Sellers tried, but price closed above it. Once a supply zone is mitigated, its remaining orders get consumed. It becomes weak. That's why on the second test, price sliced through it easily.
B) ALTERNATIVE DEMAND - CURRENTLY MITIGATING
This is where GER40 is trading right now. This cyan zone is not the ultimate demand, but a counter-trend demand created during the new bullish leg. It has three key levels:
- Immediate Support: 25,710.0
- Mid-Level Support: 25,520.0
- Deep Unmitigated Support: 25,340.0
Price is currently mitigating this zone. Each green arrow on your chart shows demand being defended. This is the active decision point.
From here, institutions have two logical paths:
Scenario 1: Sell-Side Sweep Before Continuation
If 25,710.0 fails to hold, price will likely engineer a sell-side sweep down to 25,340.0. This would be a grab of sell-side liquidity, meaning sell-stops resting below the recent higher lows, sweeping the late longs before continuing higher. The blue arrows showing 25,980.0 -> 25,780.0 -> 25,340.0 represent this engineered drop.
Scenario 2: Direct Bullish Continuation (Higher Probability)
If 25,710.0 holds as valid demand, it becomes the launchpad. The next targets are the buy-stop liquidity pools resting above the recent swing highs.
The logical institutional targets are:
- Target 1: 25,880.0
- Target 2: 26,020.0
- Target 3: 26,140.0
Above each swing high, buy-stop liquidity rests. Early sellers have their stop losses there. Institutions will drive price to grab that buy-side liquidity before showing any real selling. The final destination for this entire bullish order flow remains the ULTIMATE SUPPLY - UNMITIGATED at the top.
What This GER40 Study Teaches Index Traders
- Never buy a Retail Zone: The first high is for retail to buy, the second high is for institutions to sell into them.
- Liquidity precedes structure: GER40 never reversed randomly. It reversed only after grabbing buy-side liquidity.
- Respect unmitigated zones only: A mitigated supply around 25,980.0 is weak. The ultimate unmitigated demand at 25,340.0 and ultimate supply at the top are the only zones that truly matter.
- Sell-stops are below lows, Buy-stops are above highs: This is the core of institutional logic. Below any low, sell-side liquidity rests. Above any high, buy-side liquidity rests.
As long as GER40 holds above 25,340.0, the path of least resistance remains bullish towards 26,140.0 and ultimately towards the untouched supply at the top.
